In this special prequel episode, Samantha ‘Atom Eve’ Wilkins discovers her superpowers as a young girl – and must come to terms with her own sinister origins as she discovers a family she never knew she had.
Review
In March 2021, Amazon Prime Video premiered Invincible the animated TV series based on Robert Kirkman‘s popular comic book series. The first season portrayed Atom Eve as a pretty accomplished superheroine who possesses the ability to manipulate matter at the molecular level.
This Tv special goes back to Samantha’s origin and it is more surprising than I would have expected. I knew the show to have complex and interesting storylines, yet this origin managed to surprise me to some extent. Despite the 55 min run the story feels full, from her birth, the discovery of her powers to Atom Eve’s understanding of them. It might all sound a bit cliché but the execution is quite on point. The tone and emotion of the piece are managed with skill, as depressing as it can get, it’s not a total bummer because Young Atom Eve is resilient, smart, and compassionate. The voice work is also top-tier, and the animation is beautiful if not a bit bare in some places, but the action makes up for it big time. There’s an impressive display of her powers in an entertaining showdown.
Invincible: Atom Eve is an enjoyable standalone prequel to whet our appetite for the four-episode run of the second season of Invincible coming in November this year.
A teaser trailer for season 2 was also released enjoy:
