Why Worn Out Spine?

Almost two years after I created a Worn Out Spines on Tumblr – now wornoutspine also works because that’s the domain that was available. The name might sound weird but it came to me when I saw the condition the books in my bookcase were in. They were used, cracked, their spines were completely worn out.

It might sound like I’m a some kind of bookworm, but actually I’m not. Reading for pleasure came into my life with Harry Potter. Unlike what you might think, I didn’t fell in love with these books with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I read my first J.K. Rowling book when my best friend at the time forced Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on me, because he thought he’d be perfect for the Viktor Krum role. I fell in love with the book and then read the third, and second within a few weeks before the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret movie came out. And I’ve been reading books – very slowly – ever since.

Growing up I had a bookcase in my bedroom but the only books I cracked open were the science books with the funny DIY experiments in them. As for movies they were always in my life, I went to the movies as often as could, sometimes marveling at the sheer skill it took to make them, or re-imagining how it could have been better.

Reading Harry Potter coincided with that period in my life when I was trying to create my own stories. It was probably one of the reasons why – apart from my laziness – I didn’t want to read the Goblet of Fire. At the time writing was a means to an end, I typed slowly, so writing these stories I’ve had in head for years was a way to familiarise myself with the keyboard and type faster. That’s how I got a taste for writing.

Writing became something I did sporadically over the years but never talked about it. Today, I like writing more and more. I’m still shy about it, and I’m usually very critical of what I write but I’ve gained enough confidence to tell my friends that I write on my spare time or even publish some of my short stories.

So that’s what wornoutspines is about, the books I read that inspire me, or inspired the movies and T.V. shows based on them. Writing reviews is something I do while writing my own. As I’ve said on Tumblr, “I used to write for myself, now, I also want to be read.”
