Possession is nine-tenths of the law.
Spencer Bailey has spent his entire life under government oversight for something he
can’t change: his magic’s affinity for breaking souls. After surviving the end of the world,
Spencer joins the Supernatural Operations Agency with the intention of keeping his
head down and his hands clean.
Tasked with tracking down a stolen artifact, Spencer wants to run his first case with the
SOA by the book. The master vampire of the Seattle Night Court won’t make that easy.

How was it?
I’ve been a bigger fan of the Soulbound series with each entry and each re-read, so when this spin-off was announced I was both surprised and ecstatic.
This one is about former P.I.A. Special Agent Spencer Bailey, the soulbreaker Mage featured in On the Wings of War – which might be my favorites based on the number of times I read it – and A Veiled & Hallowed Eve. He now works for the S.O.A. and his first case takes to Seatle where Takoma This story is both different and familiar, different because Spencer is very much his own man with his own kind of magic and limitations, the familiar comes in with the magic users, vampires, and godpacks but also through the government’s oversight of Spencer’s magic that is reminiscent of Patrick’s debt to the gods, and of course the cameos. When it comes to the cameos it’s interesting to see these characters through Spencer’s story and how they have evolved since the battle at the end of the world two years ago. I am trying so hard not to spoil.
The case that brings Spencer to the Emerald City – That’s apparently a nickname for Seatle – is very interesting on its own but you see almost immediately how unlike Patrick he is. The investigation kept me engaged a tad more than the romance even if Takoma and Spencer are amazing. The steam is sparse though and in my reading experience it felt like a re-read because in most of my full or partial re-reads, I tend to skip the steamy scenes – unless it’s been a while… since I read them! There’s one in particular that was happening at the wrong place and the wrong time. It was acknowledge in the story but it kept me from appreciating it fully since there was also someone who could definitely hear them so it made the whole thing a bit awkward for me.
In the end, I really enjoyed the ride, and even took a pause for a day because I didn’t want to finish it lol. I’ve rated it a solid 4 stars but I suspect the rating may go up with future reads and/or the audiobook that I am dying to listen to.
