Fluke and the Fantastic Finale (The Fantastic Fluke #5) by Sam Burns | Book Review

For centuries, the Believer cult has preyed on arcane mages from their place in the shadows. Now, for better or worse, Sage has taken arcane magic public, and all eyes are on him. While he’s not comfortable in the spotlight, neither is the cult that wants him dead.

But the Believers aren’t quite ready to give up yet.

In this fifth and final book in The Fantastic Fluke series, they’ll take their shot at burning down Sage’s whole network of friends and associates, by whatever means necessary.

How was it?

The last book of The Fantastic Fluke series has quite a different feel compared to the previous books. There is a sense that we have arrived, that the wilted flower that was Sage in the first entry has now bloomed and thrived. So much of the series was about Sage’s growth, him finding a way out of his loneliness and self-doubt.

In each book, he seemed to have gained something that lessened the effects of his insecurities but the story in this novel seems to have skipped a pivotal moment in Sage’s journey. I’m not sure what it is but I feel like it is what could have made this final entry greater than it is. We’re not really seeing Sage or even Freddie coming into their own, they are – at least Sage is kind of already there. The wrap-up has already started and we’re just catching the tail-end of it.

It’s quite an exciting, fast-paced, and fun read but again I needed a bit more…complexity? As solid as this finale is parts of it were a bit too easy. The threat the Believers – for some reason, I always read it as the Belibers that’s how much of a joke I thought they were – didn’t quite live up to the hype.

I don’t know maybe I took too long to get to this entry. I will reread the entire series and revisit the review at some point.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
