Based on the comic book created by Peter M. Lenkov and Lucas Marangon, this movie was written by Matt Manfredi (The Boys) and Phil Hay. Robert Schwentke and stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Jeff Bridges (The Giver), Mary-Louise Parker (Red Sparrow, Mr. Mercedes), and Kevin Bacon (Blackmass, X: First Class).

Premise: A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him.

Review: I recently revisited R.I.P.D. one night when I was browsing the old movies available on Prime Video. There are three things that I remember about this movie: That it’s a comic book adaptation, I liked it, and it bombed at the box office.

This movie has aged pretty well, and the jokes are still funny – at least the ones that worked back then are, – even though, I didn’t remember having trouble understanding Jeff Bridges at times. The story does its job, it’s not mind-blowing but it has enough to hold your attention. The action scenes are pretty cool, and cartoonish, and serve the story well, and there are plenty of them. The visual effects look just as good as they did back then. They’re not great but they don’t look worst since time has passed. The cartoonish feel helps in that respect.
In hindsight – I can’t believe that it had not occurred to me at the time – R.I.P.D. has an undeniable Men in Black feel to it – which probably explains all the hate it got the time. It remains an overall fun movie to watch, with lots of action scenes and comedy.

I can see this being rebooted or sequeled and I’d check it out, but a slightly more serious, horror-ish, Blumhouse-esque reboot, sequel, or even a TV series (6 to 8 episodes) would be awesome. Keep some humor, ramp up the horror and drama a bit, and polish the visual effects so the Deados kind of looks scary, grime, and dangerous but we’re still able to look at them. I can almost see – but I’m not gonna work on this.
So what do you think, about the movie and my reboot/sequel idea?
