Review

I love the new take on the Sleepy Hollow tale, the show has a nice mix of elements that I appreciate in a TV Show: a fantasy and supernatural side with a time-traveling twist. My first manuscript has those elements for a reason, I love this stuff.

Having a Revolutionary War soldier, Ichabod Crane, waking up in modern times to partner with a sheriff lieutenant, Abigail Mills, to fight supernatural beings gives some kind of edge to this show. It allows it to differentiate itself enough from other supernatural TV shows and adds an interesting and humorous dynamic between the two protagonists with Crane’s fish-out-of-water experiences and historical knowledge, and Abbie’s practical nature.

The procedural aspects of the show paired with the historical one make every mystery and the detective work that ensues a little more exciting as it often combines historical events and figures with supernatural threats. The fantasy side makes “the history lesson” fun.

The supernatural intrigues, the dangerous headless Horseman, and the ancient prophecy about the apocalypse are entertaining but the secret sauce is Abbie and Ichabod. Both are experiencing things that they never could have imagined, their different backgrounds, skills, and personalities make for a compelling partnership. Beharie and Mison have great chemistry and I particularly like the fact that it’s completely platonic.

The first season of Sleepy Hollow lays the groundwork for an exciting show with a nice blend of genres with two excellent leads. To go back to the pilot, the seven-year period of tribulation mentioned in that episode sounds suspiciously like a TV contract lol.

Rating: 7 out of 10.
