Celyn was instantly attracted to the sexy vampire when they met by chance at a pub. Thinking he was about to experience the best hook-up of his life, Celyn never expected to end up running across the streets of Budapest with Remi while the High Council of Sorcery was trying to kill them. Dodging spells and holing up in secret lairs, Remi and Celyn find something even rarer than the object Remi carries: a chance at true love.
Remi has been doing the same job for the last two thousand years: specialist courier of valuable magical objects and sensitive information. Sent on a mission to get a powerful talisman to the City Master of the Boston Bloodclan, Remi ends up with an unexpected complication: Celyn, a beautiful fae college student who was in the right place at the wrong time.
How was it?
Although Blood Omen is a short story introducing two new characters, Celyn and Remi, in The Beacon Hill Sorcerer series it’s not a novella that can be read as a stand-alone. Contextual clues are needed to fully appreciate the handful of days we’re spending with this ancient vampire and his half-fae college student in this rather thrilling and captivating story.
Celyn, is a likable character with a dynamic personality. Remi, the vampire, is also a well-developed character with a rich backstory that adds depth to his character and layers to the series as a whole. The plot is nicely woven, with a few twists and surprises that keep this novella interesting. The pace is brisk, with captivating action scenes that add suspense and excitement to the story.
The romance between Celyn and Remi is handled well, with palpable chemistry between the characters despite the rather inta-love aspect of it. The love scenes are tasteful and hot but bring on a surprise aspect to vampires in this series that I don’t remember catching in any other books even with my many re-reads. It technically makes some kind of sense that fluids other than blood would have the living magical energies vampires need to survive but it’s still kind of weird. It also suggests that vamps might be able to live off of it without ever consuming blood lol.
If you’re a fan of the series this entry serves as a tasty appetizer to The Necromancer’s War, Blood Omen is an excellent read with a good dose of romance and adventure that keeps you locked in from beginning to end.
