Deadpool & Wolverine (Movie Review) | A Delightful Meta Marvel Ride That Defies Expectations

The third installment in the Deadpool franchise, directed by Shawn Levy, is a thrilling blend of action, comedy, and sci-fi that captivates from start to finish. Deadpool & Wolverine offers a surprising ride that defies expectations and breathes new life into the superhero genre. While my rating is not very high, this film stands out as a remarkable addition to the Marvel universe, merging Deadpool’s irreverent humor with Wolverine’s gritty intensity.

The film kicks off with a listless Wade Wilson, who has seemingly left his days as Deadpool behind. However, when an existential threat looms over his homeworld, Wade must suit up again, this time teaming up with the ever-reluctant Wolverine. This dynamic duo, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, delivers outstanding performances that are both hilarious and heartfelt.

One of the film’s strongest points is its ability to surprise delivering a delightful cinematic experience. My screening was filled with laughs, claps, and gasps from the audience throughout the movie, a testament to the engaging narrative of the film, and its unexpected and amusing cameos. These cameos are not blink-and-you-miss-it appearances but are well-integrated into the story, adding depth and enjoyment.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

The portrayal of Wolverine in this movie is perhaps the most comic-accurate to date – and I’m not just talking about the costume -, a treat for long-time fans, and another example of the film’s dedication to staying true to its source material. Deadpool & Wolverine also retains the essence of a Deadpool movie while incorporating a new MCU sheen, making it feel fresh yet familiar, and giving it a polished look and feel that distinguishes it from its predecessors. It cleverly celebrates the Marvel movies that preceded the MCU, bringing in specific and unexpected characters from those eras.

True to form, the movie doesn’t shy away from taking jabs at the MCU and the comic book movie genre as a whole. These jabs are clever, warranted, and never mean-spirited. The film is meta, sharp, and a joy to watch, with Jackman and Reynolds at the top of their game. The performances are top-notch, Emma Corrin also delivers a standout performance, leaving a lasting impression, so much so that it leaves you wanting to see her character in a different, less comedic context to explore her full potential.

Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine is an enjoyable and sharp meta-commentary that provides a good time at the cinema. While it may not be mind-blowing to me, it is undoubtedly an exciting and entertaining film that celebrates the legacy of Marvel movies while pushing the boundaries of the superhero genre.

Rating: 7 out of 10.
