Review

Creature Commandos, the first animated entry into James Gunn‘s revamped DC Universe, is a wild blend of action, humor, and supernatural misfits. The first two episodes introduce a quirky mix of characters, referencing The Suicide Squad (2021) and Peacemaker for those keeping track of Gunn’s previous work for DC.

The series kicks off at breakneck speed, assembling the titular Creature Commandos quickly – perhaps too quickly. While the humor didn’t consistently land for me, some moments carried Gunn’s signature style, reminiscent of his work on Guardians of the Galaxy.

As for characters, Rick Flag Sr. emerges as an intriguing centerpiece, grappling with the shadow of his late son in a way that might be promising for deeper character development. Meanwhile, The Bride and Eric (Frankenstein’s Monster) deliver standout moments – The Bride’s tragic backstory is compelling, and Eric offers a twist on the classic Frankenstein narrative, though his “lovable stalker” trope is polarizing.

The first episode struggled to find its rhythm, ending abruptly, but episode two gains momentum with richer storytelling and better character focus. The action sequences are strong, and the show hints at bigger plans within the new DC Universe. While it’s not an immediate knockout, Creature Commandos is an intriguing experiment that could grow into something memorable.

Yet I’m not sure that I’m looking forward to more episodes.

Rating: 6 out of 10.
