Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Review | A Haunting, Heartfelt Prequel That Hits Hard

If you’re an anime fan (or even just anime-curious), Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is one of those films that will pull you in from the very first frame. Serving as both a prequel to the hit series and a standalone story, it’s packed with impressive animation, memorable characters, and more emotional gut-punches than I was prepared for.

At its core, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 isn’t just about cursed energy and flashy battles; it’s actually about grief, love, and learning to live with pain. Yuuta Okkotsu starts the film as a timid, haunted kid who wants nothing more than to disappear. His childhood friend Rika’s spirit has been twisted into a terrifying curse of a monster that lashes out violently at anyone who threatens him.

What could have been a straight-up horror setup instead becomes a story of growth, healing, and self-discovery. Watching Yuuta evolve from someone crushed by his circumstances into a true exorcist willing to fight for others is very satisfying. Honestly? He feels just as much of a main protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen as Yuji does in the series.

As for the animation, music, and style, this production knows how to deliver a spectacle. The visuals are stunning with fluid fights, eerie spirits, and quite beautiful moments that stick with you. The soundtrack is just as good. The music amplifies the intensity of every battle while still hitting the emotional beats where it counts.

One of my favorite parts of this film is how it shines a spotlight on some of the supporting cast we only get glimpses of in the main series. Seeing younger versions of Maki, Panda, and Toge as first-years is such a treat, especially with how much some of their backstories get fleshed out here.

Maki, in particular, really stood out, her struggle against the Zenin clan and her determination to forge her own path hits hard. Panda and Toge also get their moments to shine (yes, even the Panda), and together, they make Yuuta’s journey feel like part of something bigger.

After watching this movie and season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Suguru Geto schemes feel…real, like an actual plan unfolding. You can really see the threads of his ideology and how dangerous he is in a way that only makes his presence in the larger story scarier.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a visually and emotionally spectacular story that stands on its own while deepening the world of the series. It’s a movie that balances supernatural horror with heartfelt human moments, and by the end, you might just find yourself tearing up like I did.

Whether you’re new to the franchise or already a JJK diehard, this film is a must-watch.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
