Again (Fox Hollow Zodiac 2) by Morgan Brice | Audiobook Review

The fast, furry, and furious! A lynx shifter, pursued by a cryptid trophy hunter. A wolf shifter desperate to rescue a lover who’s not just his fated mate—but his one true pairing across past lives. And a love that transcends time.

Lynx shifter Noah Wilson narrowly escaped being captured by the Huntsman. While recuperating in Fox Hollow, he meets his fated mate, wolf shifter Drew Lowe.

Noah has to return to Canada to finish filming his TV projects, so he and Drew visit when they can and come up with creative solutions to their long-distance relationship. Noah and Drew are sure they’re meant for each other and start making plans.

Drew’s dreams make him wonder if he and Noah are more than fated mates—could they be a true pairing, destined to find each other lifetime after lifetime?

Then Noah accidentally records a murder, and the killer is on his trail. Can he elude a master tracker and reach the safety of Fox Hollow, or will he and Drew have to wait to find happiness in another life?

How was it?

I went into this one not knowing anything since I trust Morgan Brice at this point. I did enjoy Huntsman but didn’t remember much of it. The Zodiac part of the name Fox Hollow Zodiac series almost seemed like an afterthought, I have no recollection of zodiac signs playing a part in it but in Again it’s mentioned enough to be noticed.

As for the plot, it’s more exciting than I anticipated, not exactly the sweet and cozy romance I envisioned from the first few chapters, it’s a bit more thrilling. There’s a hunt/chase element to this story and a mystery happening at the same time that adds some fear and excitement to it. Both situations – the hunter and its prey, and the mystery/problem that needs to be resolved, – are cleverly linked and life or death situations for our main characters. It gives both of them something to do independently while working toward the same goal, being together. It also raises the stakes while entertaining us, since solving just one problem isn’t enough. In order for Noah and Drew to fully consummate the relationship they’re building both of the challenges they’re facing need to be solved.

I guess this book qualifies as a slow burn since it’s kind of about a long-distance relationship but it manages to be hot and interesting. Noah and Drew are well established as individuals yet it’s easy to root for them as a couple. It’s low angst with lots of action and suspense, and it’s reasonable, meaning that for a fated mate story, it’s nice to see the pair not rush into the relationship. Plus in the end, circumstances outside of their control are more at fault than an unwillingness on their part to be together right away. They’re figuring things out and before they know it their naissant bond is threatened so they fight for what could be having had a glimpse of what they could have and lose.

Lastly, because I don’t want to go into spoilers, the narration is great, the work John Solo did with the dual POV really added to the excitement.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
