Review

I expected gore and comedy, and since the only other spin-off to date was the animated The Boys Presents: Diabolical, my hopes weren’t high. What I did not expect was the complexity the show came in with right off the bat.

The show is deeper, more intriguing, and fun. The lighter fun aspects come from the university setting and don’t carry the same weight as a show depicting superheroes protecting civilians. The intrigue both comes from the characters themselves and the shadow of Vaught. This company is still the exploitative and morally bankrupt company depicted in The Boys so it makes sense that a university created by such a company wouldn’t be as squeaky clean.

As for the characters they are amazing. They have interesting backstories – some were just alluded to, but these hints were good enough for me – and a great dynamic with each other. Their powers are cool and keep getting used in unexpected ways, and they’ve set up a decent mystery with “The Woods.” I’m curious to see where it all leads and if and how it will impact The Boys S4.

Gen V fits seamlessly into the world established in The Boys and fits great with the confines of the university setting in which it takes place in.
