REVIEW

In a cinematic landscape saturated with superhero tales, Madame Web emerges as a puzzling addition to the genre. Director S. J. Clarkson and her cast led by Dakota Johnson, attempt to delve into the mystique surrounding the titular character from Marvel Comics. However, what unfolds on screen is so outrageous that it had to be on purpose because it’s such a disjointed mess that I fail to see why they even released it.

Johnson’s Cassandra “Cassie” Webb brings an awkward charm to the role, but her character’s journey feels contrived and lacking in depth despite being the most developed character in this film! The supporting cast, including Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced as the potential Spider-Women, adds little to bolster the film’s narrative. Tahar Rahim‘s antagonist Ezekiel Sims comes across as one-dimensional, failing to instill the necessary sense of menace. I wouldn’t call the trailer for this movie misleading but whoever cut it EARNED that check, it’s the best thing about the movie.

To cope, the conspiracy theorists in me suspect that this movie was made to kick the superhero movie down a peg while it’s down or kill the idea that female-lead movies can be profitable. It had to be a hit job.

Madame Web leaves a lasting impression but in the worst way, although it held promise, the execution is lackluster.

Rating: 4 out of 10.
