Based on the works of Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, Elementary is crime drama mystery TV show on a contemporary Sherlock Holmes. The show was created by Robert Doherty and stars Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as Holmes and Watson.

Premise: After a stint in rehab, an eccentric police consultant Sherlock Holmes relocates to Manhattan, where his wealthy father forces him to live with a sober companion, Dr. Joan Watson. Watson was a successful surgeon until the lost a patient deeply affected her. She took on this new career, as an addiction specialist, as another opportunity to help people. However, Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. As a sober companion, Watson has no choice but to accompany Holmes on his cases with the New York City Police and over time, her medical background is helpful.

Recap: Sherlock finds Watson’s help to be an asset to his investigations and Watson realized she loved solving cases. So Joan became Sherlock’s apprentice. The apprenticeship became a work partnership but the struggles – Moriarty for one and mostly Mycroft – put a dent int their relationship and Joan decided, since Sherlock no longer needed a sober companion, to move out of the house to set more boundaries because of Sherlock’s tendency to insert himself in every aspect of her life. This very decision took a toll on their relationship.
I might not have done the show justice in the recap but know this: The interesting cases are the reason you watch the episodes and the characters the reason to watch the seasons.

Review: The premiere was a stab in my heart from the beginning. It suddenly dawned on me how last season affected Joan and Sherlock’s relationship. The eight months span was smart because it allows for changes in the characters, the dynamic of their relationship, the possibility of interesting new plots, etc. but it also means that the fissure between Watson & Holmes was substantial.

Speaking of new plots and dynamics, we got to see Joan sans-Sherlock and it was great but weird. The bomb – I say that because I don’t want to spoil to much – dropped on Watson, was another stab in my heart, but it was amazing. The creative team seem to be introducing change this year and it’s looking so far. I am dying to see what’s changed and how it will all play out. Like I said earlier, you watch the episodes for the interesting cases but only watch the seasons for the characters.
