How was it?

This book started off really well. I was intrigued and captivated by Gentry, the main character. For one, he does came across as a regular guy who happens to be good at his job, except that job is killing people. I also liked his “integrity”, not just because of his choice of targets but also how he was acting throughout the book.

However, where this action-packed and suspenseful book put me off a bit was, when what felt grounded and plausible for a good chunk of the story turned into a bit of fantasy. The author really started to push it toward the end. Because for most of the book Gentry is skilled, resourceful, and resilient but not invincible or infallible. He has lucky breaks but they seemed plausible and were contrasted by the cuts and bruises he collected along the way, and the fact that some his ideas that made sense but turned into bad situations because of circonstances.

So when the author goes a bit extra and Court Gentry’s resilience turns him into a machine or some kind of enhanced human I was a little disappointed even if I was entertained. It’s just a small part of what was an interesting story but it bothered me. The same goes the yay America rhetoric in the book, as if the American way is the only/best way. But having one of the main villains being American did help but it makes the book look a bit dated.

The Gray Man is an enjoyable action thriller if you don’t get too nitpicky about it or like fantasy. I like fantasy.
