Extraction 2 (Movie Review) | An Immersive Adventure

Former stuntman and stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave did an amazing job on his first feature Extraction. Now he’s back with a sequel aptly named Extraction 2, still written by Joe Russo and still starring Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani (Invasion), and Adam Bessa (Hanna). Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt (Nobody, Red Notice), Tinatin Dalakishvili (Abigail), and Idris Elba are joining the cast.

Premise: After barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tyler Rake is back, and his team is ready to take on their next mission. Tasked with extracting a family who is at the mercy of a Georgian gangster, Tyler infiltrates one of the world’s deadliest prisons to save them. But when the extraction gets hot, and the gangster dies in the heat of battle, his equally ruthless brother tracks down Rake and his team to Sydney, to get revenge.

Review: Watching this movie, I had a vague idea of what the plot was because I was focused on the action. It’s designed that way since the story is simple, basically setting up action scene after action scene in international locations. The movie manages to have heart, Hemsworth, Farahani, and Bessa manages to put some emotion into it that gives weight to the fight scenes.
A lot of the action scenes are very immersive, the camera movements and long takes really put you IN the action. Yes, it’s choreographed but it doesn’t always show, unlike other action-oriented movies the action here doesn’t feel like a stunt show but more like a ride or a video game, where sometimes I felt like I was part of the fight, dodging bullets and punches with them.

Extraction 2 is impressive and exciting to watch, a solid franchise, Sam Hargrave has stepped up his game.

Rating: 7 out of 10.
