After two movies with Tom Cruise, showrunner Nick Santora (Most Dangerous Game, Prison Break, Punisher: War Zone) is back with a television version of the Jack Reacher book series by Lee Child. This first season is based on Killing Floor, book one of the Jack Reacher books and Child’s 1997 debut novel. The show stars Alan Ritchson (Smallville, Catching Fire, Titans) in the title role, Malcolm Goodwin (izombie, American Gangster), Willa Fitzgerald (The Goldfinch, Scream: The TV series), Chris Webster (Turn, DCI Banks, American Assassin ), and Bruce McGill (Shades of Blue, Rizzoli & Isles).
Premise: Within an hour of his arrival in Margate, Georgia, Jack Reacher is arrested for murder. New to town with no connection to it, Jack knows that he hasn’t killed anybody lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone.
Review: As a crime drama featuring an Ex-Military policeman in the title role, this show captures the persona of Jack Reacher really well, Reacher has an excellent lead in Alan Ritchson, he looks the part, big buff and intimidating, a real action hero look but if you’ve seen him Blue Mountain State you know he’s quite the comedic actor. His dry wit, comedic timing, and reparté make this show even better. Plus, he has this light in his eyes that gives him good guy vibes.
Considering that Reacher, despite his physique, is a man who doesn’t lead with his fits, having an actor who can convincingly spar verbally and physically is fantastic. In fact, the action in the pilot and in the season, in general, comes in later than some might expect or want. For a crime-mystery drama, this show is not bogged down by red herrings. They make little to no effort to try to fool the audience, you get a sense of who most of the bad guys are, so the series is more about the journey to uncover what’s going on. The investigation itself and the characters’ interactions.
The season was very good, the action is nicely spread out, it’s also fun, full of banter and snark
