Review

The show introduces us to the town of Sanctuary, where witches have coexisted with regular humans for centuries, providing an alternative to conventional medicine. Despite being regulated, witchcraft remains an oddity in the eyes of some, highlighting the underlying tension in the community.

The season premiere skillfully unveils the town’s idyllic façade, initially presenting a seemingly perfect community. However, as the episode progresses, the cracks begin to show, hinting at a darker undercurrent beneath the seemingly serene exterior. As accepted as witches are said to be, the show touches on the preconceived notions surrounding witches, showing us the town’s diverse attitudes towards them. It adds a layer of prejudice to the story, telling us that witches might be part of society but still viewed as “other.”

There is a first sudden and mysterious incident that comes early on in the episode, we don’t yet see what it is about but the reactions are serious enough to give us an idea. But the main conflict is the murder of the popular guy in town who was in a situationship with the local witch’s daughter.

The premiere sets the stage for a somewhat gripping narrative with a nice mix of mystery and drama. I’m intrigued but I have a fairly good idea of how this will go so I’m not too eager. The season premiered releasing the first two episodes but I’ve only watched the pilot because it was all the setup I needed to get a sense of the show.

Rating: 6 out of 10.
