Based on Chugong’s South Korean web novel (which I read instead of the manhwa), the anime follows Sung Jinwoo, the so-called “weakest hunter of all mankind,” as he stumbles into a brutal dungeon and comes out changed. Thanks to the mysterious “System” only he can see, Jinwoo gets a second shot at life, and at strength. What follows is a mix of strategy, monster-slaying, and some jaw-dropping fight animation that really sells the thrill of watching a character climb from zero to unstoppable.

One of the things I appreciated most is how faithful the adaptation is. It captures the spirit of the books, sometimes even adding small touches that make Jinwoo’s motivations clearer, like his warnings about Hwang Dongsoo. In the novels, his hunger for power could overshadow his softer motivations for fighting, such as wanting to save his mother. The anime balances that beautifully.
Visually? A-1 Pictures nailed it. The fights are smooth, the shadows look incredible, and even little details (yes, even opening a door) are animated with style. Seeing Jinwoo summon his shadow army on screen gave me goosebump; these are exactly the hype moments I loved from the novel, just brought to life in the best possible way.

I also have to shout out to Yoo Jinho’s design. I pictured him differently in my head, but the show’s take works; he’s goofy and naïve-looking, but surprisingly sharp when it counts. Those little character tweaks kept me engaged.
By the time we hit the job-change quest, I was floored. I didn’t think we’d get that this season, but I’m glad we did. Honestly, it feels like a gift to fans: the pacing is tight, the storytelling hits the right beats, and the action is always satisfying.

Solo Leveling is everything I hoped it would be and more. It’s the rare adaptation that feels like it honors the source material while also making it fresh for a new medium. If you’re already a fan, you’ll love it. If you’re new? Buckle up. Watching Jinwoo’s rise is one of the most satisfying anime experiences this year.

And with season 2 confirmed… let’s just say my hype meter is maxed out.
