Murder in a Small Town (Season Review) | A Season of Cozy Mysteries

The first – and potentially only – season of Murder in a Small Town continued to deliver on the promise of its pilot episode: a breezy, low-stakes crime drama set in a charming coastal town in British Columbia. Adapted from L.R. Wright’s Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries, the series balances lighthearted escapism with a steady stream of murder mysteries, making it an easy watch for fans of cozy mysteries.

Mya Lowe, Rossif Sutherland, and Fritzy-Klevans Destine as officer Edwina Yen, police chief Karl Alberg, and officer Andy Kendrick in Murder in a Small Town (2024)

This isn’t a show that dives deep into the grittier side of crime-solving. Instead, it thrives on its relaxed pacing and picturesque setting, with each episode introducing a new case and a fresh crop of guest stars who bring a touch of flair to the otherwise simple plots. While the “murder-a-week” format might jump the shark a bit – Seriously, how does such a small town have a steady murder rate? – it’s best to suspend disbelief and go along for the ride.

Rossif Sutherland and Kristen Kreuk in Murder in a Small Town (2024).

One of the show’s strengths is its lead characters, Karl Alberg and Cassandra Mitchell, played by Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk, respectively. Their chemistry grows stronger throughout the season, though the writing for their romance doesn’t quite reach the heights it could. Still, their dynamic brings a warmth to the series, with Kreuk’s lively presence balancing Sutherland’s quiet, contemplative portrayal of a cop finding his feet in a new environment.

Paula Patton as Dr. Elizabeth Lewis sitting in a jail cell in Murder in a Small Town (2024).

While the show rarely ventures into groundbreaking territory, some episodes stand out, such as one involving a psychiatrist that I particularly loved. However, the series is more of a “watch-and-forget” type of show, an undemanding, comforting viewing experience perfect for unwinding.

Kristen Keurk and Erica Durance as Cassandra Lee and Emma O'Brea sitting on a couch in Murder in a Small Town (2024).

Murder in a Small Town may not leave a lasting impression, but its charm lies in its simplicity. It’s the TV equivalent of a warm blanket and a cup of tea – something you return to for its familiarity and lack of stakes. If renewed for another season, it would be a welcome return to the quaint, murder-filled streets of this coastal town.
