So many lies were told about this movie. Going into Disney’s live-action Snow White, I was bracing for something unrecognizable—thanks to the internet discourse that made it sound like the story had been gutted. But imagine my surprise when it turned out to still very much be a Snow White movie. Sure, there are tweaks here and there, the dwarves are now magical creatures, and the prince is less of a “love at first sight” figure, but at its core, it sticks to the classic fairytale formula.
That said, sticking to the formula doesn’t always mean success. While there are strong creative choices (like the “storybook come to life” aesthetic), the execution feels a bit awkward. The movie has potential, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The visuals are pretty, and there are some charming moments. But it’s also not a standout. It’s just… fine. If you’re a die-hard Snow White fan, you might enjoy it, but if you’re looking for something groundbreaking, this isn’t it.
Rachel Zegler, she sings well, looks the part, and brings some charm to the role but her performance doesn’t exactly set the world on fire. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it, but there’s also nothing that makes it stand out as a fresh take on the character. Her chemistry with Andrew Burnap works, he does a great. As for Gal Gadot as the evil queen it’s a mixed bag, I don’t think the director knew how to manage her skills, because when she’s good, she shines. Her villain song? Easily one of the best moments in the film for me, it was my favorite song! Her transformation into the old crone? Genuinely fun to watch. But in other scenes, she feels flat. And while her wardrobe should have been stunning, some of the sequin dresses were…a choice, they looked awkwardly out of place, especially in a fairytale setting. I might give a pass to the black sequin dress but it was a bad idea.
At the end of the day, Snow White is a perfectly average fairytale movie just like the animated version was. It’s not the disaster the internet made it out to be. Again, if you love the original animated film, you might enjoy this for what it is: a visually charming but flawed retelling. If you were hoping for something fresh and exciting, this probably won’t be it.
And come on! One of my biggest gripes is some dresses. I never expected to walk away from Snow White thinking the costumes would be one of the most distracting parts, but here we are.
