There’s a lot to like about The Rainmaker, the new legal drama has sharp dialogue, a great casting, and a courtroom atmosphere thick with tension. But there’s also a fair amount of yelling at the TV from me, especially when Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) decides, yet again, to do something wildly impulsive.
The premiere set us up for a juicy legal thriller with fresh law graduate Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) going head-to-head with veteran courtroom shark Leo Drummond (John Slattery) in a legally, morally, and personally messy case. And you’ve got a recipe for binge-worthy drama.
When The Rainmaker focuses on the cases, it thrives. The legal battles are smartly written and unpredictable, with that classic Grisham flavor (idealists versus institutions, truth versus spin). And the trio of Bruiser (Lana Parrilla), Rudy, and Deck (P.J. Byrne) is the show’s beating heart. Their chemistry is effortless, their banter is sharp, and honestly, I could just watch them argue about anything. By the way, Deck is the MVP. Every episode, he brings warmth, humor, and a dose of common sense that Rudy desperately needs. The friendship between Deck and Bruiser gives the show a kind of scrappy charm that balances the heaviness of the legal drama.

As for Rudy. 😒
I started off rooting for him, but somewhere along the way, that goodwill evaporated fast. He’s impulsive, self-righteous, and makes me want to shout at my screen almost every episode. His romantic entanglements DO NOT help, that whole law school girlfriend subplot? was painful for me. I couldn’t care less about it, and every time those scenes appeared, I was very close to skipping ahead.
And yet Sarah (Madison Iseman), somehow, went from a complicated love interest I didn’t want in the show to a full-on villain in record time, and honestly? I kinda loved it. She’s meaner, colder, and dirtier than Leo Drummond himself. A proper “I hate you but you’re fascinating” character. Just… someone please tell Rudy to stop trying to save her, she’s a grown woman making her own decisions. DO I want to see her pay for those decisions? Yes! Do I want to see her redeem or dating Rudy…..NO!

Even with all my complaints, I can’t deny that I was hooked. The finale had me anxious, second-guessing every jury reaction. The tension was real, and I genuinely didn’t know which way things would swing. For all his flaws, Rudy’s determination gives the show momentum.
What The Rainmaker nails is the messiness of ambition, how good intentions and ego collide in a system that doesn’t care about either. It’s messy, it’s dramatic, and occasionally maddening, but that’s what makes it fun.
The Rainmaker isn’t at all perfect, but it’s juicy TV. It’s full of twists, flawed people, and courtroom drama! If we get a Season 2, I’m in, mostly to see Deck, Bruiser, and Rudy team up again, watch Sarah fully embrace her villain era, and see if Leo Drummond manages to wriggle out of trouble.
Just… maybe let’s tone down Rudy’s love life next time. Please.
