Wilderness (Season 1 Review) | Revenge, Red Flags, and Taylor Swift Vibes

I went into Wilderness expecting something slick and entertaining, maybe even a little predictable. You know the type: a scorned wife, a cheating husband, a getaway with sinister undertones. Very generic thriller on paper kind of stuff. And yeah, the pilot plays right into that… but then episode two hits and suddenly the story starts tilting in a way that made me lean forward a bit.

A still from the show 'Wilderness' in which four people stand in a lush forest, dressed in casual outdoor clothing, appearing to be on a hike. On the left, a blonde woman in a colorful oversized jacket and shorts stands with her arms crossed, looking displeased. Beside her, a man in a yellow tank top and beige pants leans on a tree with a cheerful smile. To the right, a woman with a ponytail and a large hiking backpack faces a man in a dark long-sleeve shirt and shorts, who is smiling and carrying a backpack. The group appears to be engaged in a conversation amid the dense greenery and tall trees.

It’s based on B.E. Jones’ novel, which I haven’t read yet, and while the premise screams Gone Girl-lite, the show has its own vibe. The psychological tension builds more quietly, and Jenna Coleman gives Liv a slow-burn edge that really works for me. You’re not entirely sure what she’s going to do, or how far she’ll go, and that’s what keeps it interesting.

Also, can we talk about that Taylor Swift needle drop? “Look What You Made Me Do” is the theme song, and it fits almost too well. It’s one of those things where the song is such a good match, it almost spoils it before the plot gets there. Like, are we about to see petty revenge or full-on chaos? The music says yes. (And honestly, I kind of love that.)

A still image from the TV series 'Wilderness' featuring Jenna Coleman as Liv Taylor, sitting in a convertible, looking in the distance, wearing sunglasses, and yellow sweater.

The story is simple on the surface – relationship cracks, emotional spirals, a trip that turns into a ticking time bomb – but there’s a little more nuance underneath, especially as Liv’s choices start to unravel. It’s less about murder and more about manipulation, control, and self-reckoning, with a few very dramatic detours.

I didn’t read the book ahead of the show, partly because I like to have some space between book and screen, and partly because this one really snuck up on me. If you have read it – no spoilers – but is it twistier than it seems? Because I get the sense there’s more going on than the trailer lets on.

Overall, Wilderness is a fun, messy little thriller that pulls you in with drama and keeps you guessing with its shifting emotional ground. It’s not quite Gone Girl, but it’s definitely her chaotic cousin.
