Will Trent (S1 review) | A Cop Drama with Strong Characters

I like police procedurals and it turns out that Will Trent had a pretty good pedigree from the get-go from creators Liz Heldens (The Passage, Friday Night Lights), Daniel T. Thomsen (Batwoman, Westworld, Once Upon a Time), and the writer of the novels the show is inspired by Karin Slaughter.
Ramón Rodríguez (The One and Only Ivan, Iron Fist) stars as the titular character with Erika Christensen (Wicked City, Veronika Decides to Die), Iantha Richardson (This Is Us, Good Trouble), Jake McLaughlin (Black Bird, Savages), and Sonja Sohn (Luke Cage, The Originals, Shaft, The Wire). rounding out the cast.

Premise: The series revolves around special agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique viewpoint to ensure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the GBI.

Review: This show is one of the happiest accidents I’ve stumbled upon. I loved the pilot and every single episode that followed. The show is simple but effective, it has a somewhat light and chill vibe despite featuring some gruesome cases. Maybe it’s the setting that contrasts well with the sometimes dark material but it works.

The characters are fantastic and complex. It’s maybe a little too convenient that a lot of them have so much history with one another but that history is juicy enough to overlook those connections. They are raw and messy sometimes but it’s easy to root for them, in particular Will Trent. He’s so tightly wound with limited social skills, very prickly at times yet he’s a sweetheart that is good at his job. The characters’ personal lives and cases are interesting and very engaging. The acting elevates these storylines that can sometimes be a bit predictable and fast.

As dark as it can get this show is a cozy comfort show for me. I hope season two will be even better.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
