The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry (Movie Review) | Unexpectedly Emotional and Beautiful

I went into The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry knowing absolutely nothing about it, and honestly, I think that made the experience hit even harder.

Kunal Nayyar in the storied Life of A.J. Fikry

This is one of those movies where, if you stop and really look at the structure of the story, it’s kind of all over the place. Life-changing events happen suddenly, characters drift in and out, years pass, and somehow, against all odds, it completely works. Not because everything is perfectly crafted, but because the movie understands emotion better than structure.

And wow, this movie hurts. Not in a manipulative way either. It’s the kind of story that sneaks up on you emotionally, and if you happen to have some unresolved feelings in your personal life, it will get to you, whether what you’re dealing with at the time is similar or not. Loss, loneliness, missed opportunities, second chances, it taps into all of that.

Kunal Nayyar is genuinely great as A.J. Fikry. He gives the character a quiet sadness and an awkward warmth that make it easy to connect with him, even when he’s pushing people away. And the supporting cast, especially Lucy Hale and Christina Hendricks, help create this cozy emotional atmosphere that makes the film feel deeply human.

What I loved most is that I never really knew where the movie was going. At no point could I predict the exact direction it would take, but I was along for the ride. It’s messy, heartfelt, funny in small ways, devastating in others, and ultimately very comforting.

Jordyn McIntosh as Maya stand in front of Kunal Nayyar as A.J. Fikry, with a decorated Christmas tree and bookshelves in the background.

By the end, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry feels less like a traditional drama and more like someone quietly reminding you that life can still surprise you, even after grief convinces you otherwise.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I pressed play. I just know I left emotionally destroyed in the best way possible.

Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
