Pilot Review: The production value is the first thing that strikes you. It’s not quite blockbuster level but it’s close. The first episode doesn’t feel like a CW show at all. In fact, the pilot’s first 15 minutes would have been stretched into at least 3 episodes in a regular CW series.
The show is grounded in such a way that it doesn’t feel like a fantasy. It’s a little stripped down, and realistically dark. I would go as far as saying that this show – at least the pilot – would have still worked if the “super” aspects were taken out. However, it makes for an interesting down-to-earth Superhero show, with Easter eggs and nods to the comics, TV series, and movies that preceded it. My main concern with the show is that I almost don’t want it to be too long. A tight 10 to 13 episodes would be nice.
They very much made the story about the couple and their kids, not just Superman and I love that. Lois, Jonathan, and Jordan are not glorified extras in Clark’s life, they have a purpose. This episode sets up interesting storylines for each of them and I’m eager to see how they’ll develop.
The cast is top-notch, Bitsie Tulloch, Tyler Hoechlin, and Dylan Walsh I knew to be good. I was excited to see them in their roles, in particular, Walsh as General Lane in the way he’s portrayed here. As for the twins, what a surprise, I think I found two new favorite actors in Jordan Elsass & Alex Garfin. They made like each twin right away.
Superman & Lois is off to a great start, I can’t wait to see more.
