TV Review: About a boy

Based on the best-selling Nick Hornby novel comes the series “About a Boy,” it’s a different kind of coming-of-age story created for television by Jason Katims (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”). The series stars Minnie Driver, David Walton, Al Madrigal, Annie Mumolo & Benjamin Stockham.

Premise: Will Freeman lives a charmed existence. After writing a hit song, he was granted a life of free time, free love and freedom from financial woes. He’s single, unemployed and loving it. So imagine his surprise when Fiona, a needy single mom and her oddly charming 11-year-old son, Marcus, move in next door and disrupt his perfect world. When Marcus begins dropping by his home unannounced, Will’s not so sure about being a kid’s new best friend, until, of course, Will discovers that women find single dads irresistible. That changes everything and a deal is struck: Marcus will pretend to be Will’s son and, in return, Marcus is allowed to chill at Will’s house, play ping-pong and gorge on steaks, something his very vegan mom would never allow. Before he realizes it, Will starts to enjoy the visits and even finds himself looking out for the kid. In fact, this newfound friendship may very well teach him a thing or two that he never imagined possible – about himself and caring for others. (Source: NBC Television)

Previously on the show: I remember being very skeptical when I first heard about this show despite the fact that the pilot was directed by Jon Favreau. I didn’t want my prejudices to guide me so I watched it. The first season was great, it had the spirit of the movie, and it was funny with quirky and lovable characters. By the end of Season 1, Will fell in love with Sam (Adrianne Palicki), a beautiful doctor and that love takes him to New York away from Fiona and Marcus. Making Will realize just how much they mean to him.

Review: The season premiere, yesterday, had in the same vibe last season’s episode had. It was easy to watch, eccentric, and relatable. The changes that came with season one made for an interesting opening to the season slightly changing Marcus and Will’s dynamic. They’ve spent some months apart, new problems have arisen so I’d like to see how it will affect this unconventional family unit relationship.

I do hope that the series won’t always be a Marcus pity party the whole season. Poor kid, please cut him some slack. The premiere raised a few questions, like, is Will going to stay in New York for love, or return to his home and to Marcus, whom he has grown to love as well? Since leaving Will and Fiona to live in New-York might get him out of his problems.

Season review: The first season was great it had the spirit of the movie, it was funny with quirky and lovable characters.
